Superintendent Again Asks Parents to Help Reduce Social Media Threats to Schools
Fort Worth ISD Superintendent Kent. P. Scribner again has written a message to all District parents asking them to help stem the flow of social media threats aimed at schools and students.
The Fort Worth ISD takes seriously all threats levelled at our campuses, students, staff and visitors. Such activity is a crime and will be treated as such when those perpetrators are identified.
“I cannot emphasize strongly enough that such acts are a CRIME. Some of the students involved in sending these threats have already been arrested,” Dr. Scribner writes in his letter to parents. “Make no doubt about it - we will prosecute anyone who perpetrates such criminal activity.”
Schools are meant to be safe learning environments for all children. Threatening disruptions are stealing from that precious learning time, heightening the anxiety of students, staff and parents, and are a drain on resources.
A social media threat directed at an east side high school today resulted in a significant decreased attendance. The school has 1,054 students enrolled. Today 496 were absent. On the last day of classes last week there were only 80 students absent!
Fort Worth ISD will continue to work closely with the Fort Worth Police Department in resolving all school threats. We strongly recommend that parents take an active role in understanding their children’s use of social media.
