Students Shine in 20th Annual Elementary Music Festival
More than 400 students participated in the Fort Worth ISD Visual and Performing Arts Department’s 20th annual Elementary Music Festival, May 20.
The two-part event, themed Music Changes the World, included an afternoon clinic for the participating students, followed by an evening concert in the Trimble Tech High School Auditorium.
Two choirs – the Eighth Notes and Quarter Notes – each performed two selections, and the 408-member combined chorus performed three songs.
Guest clinician John Jacobson, a renowned author and composer, was the concert conductor. A string quartet from Texas Christian University and FWISD music teachers also took part in a few of the selections.
Festival organizers previously said the free concert offers attendees a lively, high-energy, kid-friendly show. For the student participants, it provides equal access to choral music.
“They get a glimpse into choral music, said Chrissie Seligson, an elementary music specialist. “It is an experience for children to sing in community together.”
Each elementary school music teacher was asked to select five student performers to participate in the event.
Student performers spent the last several months learning music and choreography in preparation for the festival, and their efforts did not go unnoticed.
Attendees’ responses to the festival praised the energy and talent of the young singers as well as the unity on full display by the 408-member group.
