Summit Brings Community Together for Discussion on Racial Equity
More than 320 people attended the inaugural Racial Equity Summit, hosted March 24, by the Fort Worth ISD Division of Equity and Excellence and the Texas Christian University Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies program.
The free event brought together middle, high school and college students, parents, educators and Fort Worth residents on the TCU campus for conversations focusing on three learning strands: Engage, Expand, and Take Action.
Superintendent Kent P. Scribner gave opening remarks, and a panel made up of Fort Worth ISD students examined racial and language barriers. Max Krochmal, director of Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies and the summit keynote speaker, focused his remarks on the historical context of education inequity in Fort Worth.
Among the participating exhibitors was the City of Fort Worth and Blue Zones Project, Fort Worth.
“It surpassed my hopes. It was an amazing event,” said Sherry Breed, chief of the FWISD Equity and Excellence Department. “Individuals came with so much enthusiasm.
“They wanted to have a conversation about racial equity, and they left ready to take action.”
“The big goal was to have stakeholders in the same place at the same time to engage in courageous conversations, expand their racial consciousness, and hear from multiple perspectives and find ways to take action in our communities and schools,” said Shawn Lassiter, Racial Equity Summit organizer and FWISD Professional Learning and Innovation specialist.
Ms. Lassiter said that attendees will receive an email soon that includes an impact survey from which organizers will plan their next steps.
