Texas Rangers Give Southwest Softball Big Check
The softball team from Fort Worth ISD’s Southwest High School is the recipient of a $2,000 grant from the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation.
New batting cage nets will be purchased with the check. It was officially presented Friday, January 18, at the school by Ray Casas, Texas Rangers manager of foundation programs and community outreach and a 1992 Southwest High School alumnus.
Alex Johnson, the softball team’s head coach, applied for the grant in June and was presented with the award at Globe Life Park in August.
“We recognize the work that you’re doing and want to reward you all and say thank you for that work you’re doing here and in the Fort Worth area,” said Mr. Casas.
At the official check presentation, student-athletes at Southwest heard a discussion from Texas Rangers catcher Jose Trevino and pitcher Jeffrey Springs about playing Major League Baseball, breaking into the big leagues, highlights of the recent season, motivation, the importance of an education, scholarships, working hard and having a strong support system. A question-and-answer session with the Rangers players and the young players followed. Emily Jones, the Rangers sideline reporter for Fox Sports Southwest, moderated the discussion.
