PTA Celebrates 108 Years in Fort Worth ISD with Founders Day Luncheon
The Fort Worth ISD Council of PTAs held its annual Founders Day luncheon to celebrate 108 years of dedication to the educational success of children and the promotion of family engagement in schools.
The event included remarks from Superintendent Dr. Kent P. Scribner and a presentation on family engagement by Dr. Courtney Wait, assistant principal of McLean 6th Grade Center.
Dr. Wait’s presentation, “Building Democratic Parental Participation in Schools, a Dissertation,” was based on her doctoral research. She explained that successful school-parent partnerships include PTA groups that:
- consistently communicate with parents
- recognize that parents will contribute in different ways
- hold meetings and events that welcome parents
- remove barriers to parent participation
- provide more avenues for parents to be in leadership roles
Founded in 1897 as the National Congress of Mothers, the National PTA is a powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for families and communities, and a strong advocate for public education. PTA is the largest volunteer child advocacy organization in the nation.
Dr. Scribner referenced the origins of the National PTA in his remarks and noted the organization’s long history in Fort Worth ISD.
“For 108 years, the Fort Worth Council of PTAs has represented the interests of the Fort Worth Independent School District at the campus level, in the community and at the state house. That commitment is best reflected in the PTA motto: Every child. One voice,” he said.
“One thing that never changes is the importance of partnering with our parents and families.”
Dr. Scribner emphasized the connection between parent involvement and the District mission of preparing all children for success in college, career and community leadership.
