2018 Elementary Science Research Fair to Feature More Than 100 Projects
More than 100 individual and team science projects from more than 50 Fort Worth ISD elementary schools are expected to display at the 2018 FWISD Elementary Science Research Fair.
The projects, presented by second- through fifth-grade students, will be on display for public viewing from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 18, at the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center, 5201 CA Roberson Blvd. Class projects created by pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first-grade students are being shown in exhibition.
Beginning at 6:45 p.m. is an awards ceremony announcing District individual and team first, second- and third-grade winners by grade level and the Best of Fair winner.
A reception honoring fair winners will be held Saturday, May 19, at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History.
Individual students and teams finishing first place at their campus science fair qualify to present in the District Elementary Science Research Fair.
The student-produced science projects focus on three areas of investigation – experimental, comparative and descriptive – and align with state curriculum standards.
The District competition is designed to “foster ownership and partnerships between students, the school and the science community,” and also increases student interest in science, Yohanis De La Fuente, a District core curriculum and innovation coordinator in science literacy and STEM, said. Through science research, students apply reading, writing and math skills to problem solving, she said. It also creates an opportunity in which students learn to vocalize, defend their knowledge of science methods, ms. De La Fuente added.
“Science Research Fair is an opportunity for our children to increase their literacy through implementing the practice of scientists,” she said. “In our annual FWISD Elementary Science Research Fair, our future innovators and STEM scholars are given an opportunity to communicate their research interest while showcasing their literacy.”
