More Than 90 FWISD Graduates To Participate In College Shower 2018
More than 90 Fort Worth ISD graduates are being showered with gifts to assist with the transition from high school to college.
Girls Inc. of Tarrant County will host College Shower 2018 at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2 at the Texas Christian University Brown-Lupton University Union.
Similar to the celebrations held for a bride-to-be or an expectant mother, College Shower is an event in which recent high school graduates receive gifts that prepare them for the transition to college. Girls prepare a wish list, and sponsors fulfill the list by purchasing the requested items. Some girls are even surprised with scholarships at the event. Of the 122 girls being showered from area high schools, 91 are from FWISD.
According to Girls Inc. of Tarrant County officials, the event levels the playing field and prepares girls for starting college “ready to learn.”
All shower recipients have been sponsored for the year, but there are still opportunities to get involved by:
- donating online to support Girls, Inc. ongoing college and career readiness programming;
- donating a laptop;
- registering to attend College Shower 2018, Aug. 2. Individual tickets are $30, and tables are $300.
Established in 1976, Girls Inc. of Tarrant County, is a nonprofit youth outreach organization for at-risk girls.
