Trimble Tech Students Receive Hospital Nutritional Program Training
Trimble Tech High School juniors enrolled in the Health Science Theory/Clinical course received training in the SPOONS Program (Support for and Promotion of Optimal Nutritional Status) used at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital during their second week of school. SPOONS is designed to help patients who need encouragement and assistance with feeding themselves.
Over the next few weeks each student will demonstrate their competency by performing their new skills with an actual patient during mealtime under the supervision of a nurse or a dietician evaluator. Once students qualify for hospital unit placement, they will assist the unit staff with numerous basic patient care tasks for the remainder of the year. Students will learn and work alongside technicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals as well as integrate with physicians and students from colleges who are pursuing healthcare careers.
The students are under the direction of Alex McCulloch, one of Trimble Tech's Health Science Technology teachers and supervisor over the Patient Care Technician program. Mr. McCulloch said his students are making great progress through their training.
“These excellent and rare opportunities are available because our HST students continually meet a high standard of academic achievement, personal responsibility, and maturity despite their young age.”
