Eastern Hills HS Homecoming Week Celebrates School’s 60th Anniversary
Eastern Hills High School is pulling out all the stops for its 60th anniversary celebration this week. Homecoming Spirit Week festivities started Monday, complete with hallway decorations, homecoming court selections and the unveiling of special 60th anniversary throwback T-shirts featuring an image of the school’s original front entrance, which is still in use today.
Eastern Hills is also this week’s featured CBS 11 High School Pep Rally on Friday, Oct. 11. Broadcasting live from the Highlander gym, CBS 11 Meteorologist Anne Elise Parks will interview scholar athletes, performance groups, student club members, alumni and administrators from 4:50-7 a.m. A recap of the interviews will air during 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday broadcasts, and the Saturday morning CBS 11 newscast.
The CBS 11 High School Pep Rally, a community event highlighting North Texas high schools and students, launched during the 2017-2018 school year and is now an annual tradition. Eastern Hills is one of two FWISD high schools taking part in a CBS 11 High School Pep Rally this season. O.D. Wyatt was the featured CBS 11 High School Pep Rally on Friday, Sept. 13.
Eastern Hills High School students Jose Moreno and Myah Young will control CBS 11’s social media accounts during the live pep rally. People can follow the event on Instagram at CBSDFW and Facebook at CBSDFW. Social media coverage can also be found with the hashtag #CBS11PepRally.
Following the CBS 11 broadcast, Eastern Hills will commence its homecoming parade at 10 a.m. Friday from Meadowbrook middle and elementary schools with student floats, alumni, the Highlander marching band, the JROTC battalion, football team and other student groups. The parade route down Meadowbrook Drive to Eastern Hills High School concludes with an all-student pep rally on the EHHS football field.
After the rally, alums, administrators and the band will retreat to the band hall where it will be officially dedicated to honor long-time Highlander band director Charles Watts Sr., the parade grand marshal. The Board of Education officially named the band hall for Mr. Watts, June 11, 2019.
The dedication ceremony will feature numerous alums taught by Mr. Watts during his tenure at Eastern Hills, presentations of recognition and special musical performances by current and former band members. In addition, alums celebrating their 50th reunion will visit the school for a tour and a sneak peek of the architectural renderings illustrating the nearly $50 million upgrade and renovations made possible by the 2017 FWISD bond program.
The activities continue at 5 p.m. at Handley-Scarborough Field with an alumni-hosted tailgate party for all graduating classes over the last 60 years. The tailgate runs right up to the start of the homecoming football game between Eastern Hills and Carter-Riverside at 7 p.m. The pregame coin toss will include honorary Eastern Hills alumni captains.
On Saturday, Oct. 12, the party continues. An all-alumni breakfast is being held from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at Luby’s Cafeteria in Forest Hill, 3312 SE Loop 820. Wrapping up the celebratory week is the homecoming dance starting at 8 p.m. at the school.
Eastern Hills alumni include15 former students who’ve been added to Fort Worth ISD’s Wall of Fame.
“During its 60-year history, Eastern Hills has graduated two Pulitzer Prize-winning photographers, a sitting congresswoman and former Fort Worth mayor, numerous other elected officials, judges, law enforcement officials, philanthropists, and professional athletes,” Principal Katrina Smith said. “We even have alums who are successful Wall Street financiers, authors, screenwriters, TV and movie personalities, musical performers, business leaders, medical professionals, educators and more. Given the fact that the school is about to undergo a massive $50 million upgrade and renovation, we wanted to celebrate the legacy of the past while looking forward to fostering future generations of Highlanders who aspire to make their own positive impact on our world.”
