Fort Worth ISD Kicks Off the 50th Anniversary of Week of the Young Child
Fort Worth ISD recently held a special kick-off ceremony for the 50th anniversary of the Week of the Young Child (WOYC) at Western Hills Primary School. Watch the video here.
The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The purpose of the WOYC is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.
The Week of the Young Child is also the perfect time for parents to register their children for FWISD Pre-K and kindergarten by visiting www.fwisd.org/prek.
This year, the Week of the Young Child is celebrated April 10-16. All of the early learners and teachers in Fort Worth ISD are engaged in daily thematic activities that integrate many subject areas. All Pre-K students in the District received a copy of The Misunderstood Shark, along with a week-long themed family calendar. In addition, all Pre-K teachers received a copy of The Very Impatient Caterpillar, with classroom activities.
Special guests at the celebration were FWISD Superintendent Dr. Kent P. Scribner and FWISD Chief of Academics Jerry Moore. Most importantly, a group of Pre-K students performed a special song for “Music Monday,” and added creative movement to the lyrics.
“Preparing for success in Pre-K and kindergarten starts at home,” said Dr. Scribner. “That is why we are celebrating our LITTLEST learners in a very BIG way.”
Mr. Moore emphasized that “Celebrating the Week of the Young Child presents a great opportunity to bring attention to our youngest learners. Outstanding learning opportunities start in Pre-K here in Fort Worth ISD, with our great teachers, students and schools.”
