Studio DHJ Hosts World-Renowned Landscape Architect Kathryn Gustafson
Gold Seal architecture and construction students at Fort Worth ISD’s Diamond Hill-Jarvis High School recently visited with world-renowned architect Kathryn Gustafson as part of the Studio DHJ VIP Guest Speaker Series.
Ms. Gustafson visited the class virtually Monday, September 27, from Paris, France. For more than an hour she spoke with the more than 60 students about her projects and career experience and answered student questions. She also offered students advice about careers, life and following dreams.
"I feel that it is important to inspire the kids in helping build the next generation of landscape architects,” Ms. Gustafson told students. “I am at the end of my career, and the kids are just at the beginning of theirs."
An American landscape architect of more than 35 years, Ms. Gustafson founded the firm Gustafson Guthrie Nichol (GGN) in 1999 in Seattle, Washington. She is also a founding partner of the firm Gustafson Porter + Bowman in London, England. Notable works of Ms. Gustafson include the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Mountain in Hyde Park London and The Lurie Garden in Chicago’s Millennium Park. Her work also includes the Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the landscape design for the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. In 2019, she was awarded the Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award by the International Federation of Landscape Architects, the highest honor bestowed upon a living landscape architect.
The VIP Guest Speaker Series is hosted by Studio DHJ - The DREAM Factory!, the architecture club at Diamond Hill-Jarvis High School. Alan Hilsabeck is the club sponsor and the DHJ architect teacher. The architecture and construction programs at DHJ are FWISD Gold Seal Programs of Choice.
