The third Monday in January, the nation observes Martin Luther King Jr. Day, established to honor the preacher, author, civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner. He is most notably known for his “I Have a Dream” speech delivered at the 1963 March on Washington in Washington, D.C.
Since 1994, the U.S. Congress has commemorated the holiday as a national day of service, encouraging Americans to participate in service projects within their communities.
