Celebrating Reading Success at M.H. Moore Elementary
What better way to reward our students’ hard work than with a pizza party featuring Clifford the Big Red Dog! That is what the students at Fort Worth ISD M.H. Moore Elementary enjoyed after winning the local NCAA Gymnastics Readers Become Leaders Challenge. Plus, each student received five free books, and teachers received $100 gift cards.
The celebration took place Friday, May 20, at 1 p.m., at M.H. Moore Elementary, 1809 N.E. 36th St. in Fort Worth. There was a special unveiling of the school’s Inchy Bookworm Vending Machine in the library.
Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker attended the celebration, along with FWISD Trustee Roxanne Martinez and District administrators, including Dr. Cissy Mattingly, Executive Director Hilda Caballero, and M.H. Moore Principal Ricardo Alvarez.
It is true. Readers do become leaders! The students at M.H. Moore have increased their reading time during class and at home, resulting in increased reading levels. During the 10-week competition period, M.H. Moore students read 2,980,328 minutes and averaged 4,205 minutes read, which included nearly 20,000 eBooks with myON eBooks. This year, the students have read 80,000 books.
At the District level, FWISD set a new NCAA record for minutes read by a single school district anywhere with more than 14.9 million minutes read by elementary students.
