School Threat Messages Can Bring Serious Consequences
Fort Worth, Texas – In the wake of the tragic school violence in Florida last month, many school districts are being burdened with copycat messages threatening harm against school personnel or school facilities. The Fort Worth ISD is no exception.
The District has received numerous messages since mid-February that not only disrupt valuable class time but consume law enforcement resources in an effort to determine legitimacy. Meanwhile those police resources could be used to assist those actually in need of help.
Fort Worth ISD has an outstanding working relationship with the Fort Worth, Benbrook and Forest Hill Police Departments in handling these threat messages. As part of our normal security review process, it was determined that some of the illegitimate threat messages could be eliminated if our parents were made part of the conversation.
Superintendent Kent P. Scribner has authored a letter that is being sent to all District homes as we dismiss for Spring Break. In the letter the problem is explained to parents. It helps them understand the consequences that result from such actions and provides some guidance on how parents can partner with the District and police to help eliminate false threats.
The Fort Worth ISD wishes to express appreciation for the support of Fort Worth Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald in this effort.
A copy of the letter is attached here.
