Fort Worth ISD Celebrates Week of the Young Child
The Fort Worth ISD is joining school districts across the country in celebrating National Week of the Young Child, April 8-12. The annual celebration is sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the world’s largest early childhood education association.
The Fort Worth ISD Early Learning Department is leading local efforts throughout the week celebrating young children and the families and teachers that facilitate their journey. The 2019 Week of the Young Child focus is intergenerational friendship, building community and finding beauty in unlikely places.
District and city leaders will visit early learning and elementary campuses across FWISD to read “Last Stop on Market Street,” (Última Parada de la Calle Market) to students in pre-kindergarten through second-grade. Additionally, children will create classroom work to be displayed at a later date to the public celebrating their learning experience.
A display in the FWISD Administration Building lobby, 100 N. University Drive, offers families examples of activities that are easy to reproduce at home and that will enhance child development.
Families are encouraged to participate in the week’s festivities by doing fun, at-home activities. Recently, a letter was sent home to families with daily interactive activities parents can do with their children at home.
The daily activities include:
- Monday: Music and Listening
- Tuesday: Social Issues
- Wednesday: Solving Problems
- Thursday: Sharing Stories
- Friday: Getting to Know Your City
“The purpose of the Week of the Young Child™ is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs,” the letter reads. “NAEYC first established the Week of the Young Child™ in 1971, recognizing that the early childhood years (birth through age 8) lay the foundation for children's success in school and later life. The Week of the Young Child™ is a time to plan how we—as citizens of a community, a state, and a nation—will continue to improve how we meet the needs of all young children and their families.”
Week of the Young Child™ coincides with the District’s ongoing pre-K and kindergarten online registration for the 2019 – 2020 school year. For more details about enrollment in pre-K and kindergarten, visit www.fwisd.org/prek.
