Antonio Martinez, Jr., principal of North Side High School, is excited to host a screening of the 2017 documentary film, “Ascencion,” for his students because he said they will be able to relate to the story.
“Ascencion” made its debut last year at the Lone Star Film Festival. Rusty Leaver, a film director from Weatherford, tells the story of Ascencion Banuelos, who came to the United States from Mexico in 1969 at age 13. He became the first Mexican-American to be inducted into the National Cutting Horse Association Hall of Fame.
“I’ve seen the film and it’s emotional,” Mr. Martinez said. “My North Side community will be able to relate to it, the story of someone coming to this country from Mexico, all alone, but who becomes a success and overcomes challenges because of his love of horses. I am happy to be able to show it to our students.”
Students will see the film at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Monday, January 22. After the screening, Mr. Martinez, Ascencion Banuelos and Rusty Leaver will lead a question and answer session about the film. Students will be able to talk about their reaction to the film and the film’s impact on them.
“We can teach our kids about culture, community and ethnic identity all through the love for horses,” Mr. Martinez said. “What a great story to share with my kids; they can all relate to Mr. Banuelos.”
