Author Chris Barton Featured Speaker at Rosen Elementary Annual Family Literacy Night
Award-wining children’s author Chris Barton is the featured speaker at Sam Rosen Elementary School’s Annual Family Literacy Night, Monday, February 5.
Mr. Barton, a two-time candidate for the Texas Bluebonnet Award, will present a talk titled “Write What You Want to Know About” in the school auditorium. His latest book, “Whoosh!” is up for an award and is a Fort Worth ISD Battle of the Books selection.
Family Literacy Night will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. and will also include interactive literacy activities for students in prekindergarten through fifth grade, entertainment from the school’s music students, hot cocoa and cookies. Copies of Mr. Barton’s book will be available for purchase and signing at the school’s Scholastic Book Fair, which will open for business at 5 p.m.
Students must be accompanied to the event by their parent or guardian.
The literacy night promotes a love of reading and offers innovative literacy activities parents can use at home with their children, event organizers say. Mr. Barton’s appearance promotes a love for reading and good stories and encourages students to adopt good writing practices, said Lee Sexton, the school’s library media specialist.
Sam Rosen Elementary is located at 2613 Roosevelt Ave. in Fort Worth.

The event aligns with Fort Worth ISD’s initiative, 100 X 25 FWTX, a intended goal that 100 percent of third-graders are reading on grade level or above by the year 2025. Superintendent Kent P. Scribner is partnering with Mayor Betsy Price, BNSF Executive Chairman Matt Rose to lead the community-wide Read Fort Worth initiative. This collective impact strategy engages parents, grandparents, and caregivers as well as volunteers from the city’s business sector, higher education, non-profit organizations, and the faith-based community.
