Adult Education Pilot Program Featured in Star-Telegram
Dunbar Adult Evening School, a pilot adult education program, is giving local residents the opportunity to earn a high school equivalency certificate or learn English while also being trained in a trade that could help them land their next job.
The program, which launched last fall at Dunbar High School, was recently featured in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Between 40 to 50 adults over the age of 19, currently participate in Texas high school equivalency and English Language Acquisition classes hosted on weeknights from 6 to 9 p.m. at the high school. The following trade courses are also currently offered: certified nursing assistant, Microsoft Office user specialist, introduction to information technology and robotics.
Monday, Wednesday and Tuesday, Thursday sessions are available. The program is free to qualifying students.
The Dunbar Adult Evening School is a revitalization of the campus’ community school which dissolved years ago and left a vital void in the community.
Over the next four years, the program will phase in additional career and technology education, trade and apprenticeship opportunities for its students. The school has the capacity to double its student enrollment.
Dunbar Adult Evening School is funded through a grant from the Texas Workforce Commission. Partnerships including the Historic Stop Six Initiative, the Tarrant County College Opportunity Center, Workforce Solutions of Tarrant County and others support the program.
“I think one of the things that we’ve been able to do is show the community that the District has a vested interest in the community,” said Edward Spears, FWISD Office of Adult Education director. “The opening of opportunities and awareness… has been a really big boom.”
The Office of Adult Education hosted an open house, Thursday, February 15, to share information about the Dunbar Adult Evening School program with current and prospective students. The spring semester is currently underway, and a student orientation is being planned to take place in the coming weeks.
