FWISD Earns Favorable Ratings at State Mariachi Contest
Three Fort Worth ISD mariachi ensembles participated in the 2018 UIL State Mariachi Festival Pilot recently and finished with favorable ratings.
On Friday, February 23, Polytechnic Mariachi Alas de Oro, Northside Mariachi Espuelas de Plata and Paschal Mariachi Panteras competed at the state festival, hosted on the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley campus in Edinburg.
Northside High earned a Superior (1) rating, and Polytechnic and Paschal high schools earned Excellent (2) ratings, respectively. Of the 46 ensembles competing in the state contest, only eight earned the highest ranking.
All three FWISD ensembles advanced to state after earning superior ratings at the region solo and ensemble level. At the state competition, the ensembles were judged by professional mariachi performers and mariachi educators, and those same judges provided clinics for the three groups.
Polytechnic Mariachi Alas de Oro and Paschal Mariachi Panteras are both led by directors Juan Sigala and John Olmos. Directors Ramon Nino and Corina Cantu lead Northside Mariachi Espuelas de Plata.
The UIL State Mariachi Festival Pilot is in its third year.
