4 FWISD Schools Named 2018 America’s Best Urban School Award Winners
Four Fort Worth ISD schools are 2018 winners of the America’s Best Urban School Award.
The honor, presented by the National Center for Urban School Transformation (NCUST), at America’s Best Urban Schools Symposium in San Diego, California, Wednesday, October 10, recognized:
- Young Men’s Leadership Academy (Silver winner)
- World Languages Institute (Silver winner)
- Bonnie Brae Elementary School (Bronze winner)
- Westcliff Elementary School (Silver winner)
Additionally, NCUST recognized Melany Rodriguez, a junior at WLI, as its Student Speech contest winner and Adriana Camacho, WLI PTO president, for her volunteer work on the campus.
The America’s Best Urban School Award recognized 15 schools nationwide for outstanding transformational work in urban centers of more than 50,000 students. Winning schools are awarded cash prizes, a banner, certificate and bumper stickers
Selected schools’ students are from all ethnic and special population groups, such as Special Education and English Language Learners, and consistently outperformed state averages for all respective student groups. Additionally, these schools serve a large percentage of students as economically disadvantaged, meeting requirements to be eligible for ABUS awards. The winning schools have high attendance and low suspension rates. Finally, students who have matriculated into the next level of school must continue to demonstrate high performance levels.
FWISD’s four honorees are among six Texas schools receiving America’s Best Urban School Award this year.
“The winning schools have attained a level of achievement more typically seen in schools that serve very affluent communities,” said Joseph F. Johnson, Jr. NCUST executive director, in a recent statement. “In these impressive schools, outstanding teachers and leaders maintain very high expectations for all of their students. At the same time, they create learning environments that enable students to meet their high expectations. These school exemplify how otherwise typical urban schools can transform students’ lives.”
