FWISD Students to Join Local Day of the Girl Festivities Friday
Students from eight Fort Worth ISD schools will participate in International Day of the Girl festivities on Friday, October 11.
Students from Diamond Hill-Jarvis High School, Eastern Hills High School, North Side High School, Paschal High School, O.D. Wyatt High School, Meadowbrook Middle School, Handley Middle School and the Young Women’s Leadership Academy will join five other area schools for Girls Inc. of Tarrant County’s seventh annual Day of the Girl Celebration rally at 2 p.m. on the steps of the Tarrant County Courthouse west lawn.
A celebratory march through the streets of downtown Fort Worth that will include drumlines and cheer squads from area high schools will follow the rally.
Girls Inc. of Tarrant County’s Day of the Girl event commemorates the International Day of the Girl, which was established by the United Nations in 2012. Observed annually on October 11, International Day of the Girl “aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls' empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights,” according to the UN website.
The annual event in Tarrant County draws crowds of more than 1,200 women, men and girls “to recognize the influence of women in our community, celebrate the Girls Inc. Girls’ Bill of Rights and advocate for girls’ rights everywhere,” said Valerie Salter, Director of Volunteers and Special Events for Girls Inc. of Tarrant County.
The event also informs the public of how advocating on behalf of girls benefits everyone, she added.
“We celebrate the International Day of the Girl so that all girls are able to live in a society where they are respected, valued and have all opportunities available to them,” said Jennifer Limas, Girls Inc. of Tarrant County president and chief executive officer. “Girls Inc. of Tarrant County is committed to empowering girls to go beyond traditional limitations. We know that by empowering a girl, it not only changes her life – it strengthens our communities and improves society. This is why we march with and for girls.”
