Nearly 100 Attend FWISD's Latino Studies Community Forums
Families and District staff attended two community forums relating to a Latino/a studies curriculum being developed for Fort Worth ISD K-12 students.
The District and Texas Christian University’s Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies partnered to host the forums about the curriculum:
- Tuesday, October 30 at the North Side High School Culinary Arts Café
- Monday, November 5 in the Paschal High School Cafeteria
The October 30 forum included a performance from the North Side High School Mariachi Espuelas de Plata and food prepared by the North Side High culinary art students.
The Paschal Mariachi Band performred at the November 5 gathering.
Literacy activities were made available for pre-kindergarten-aged children and older at both events.
Nearly 100 people attended the two forums.
The forum discussions focused on the following:
- What children are learning about Latino/a culture and history in school
- What parents learned about Latino/a studies in school
- The importance of incorporating Latino/a studies in curriculum
- What the public wants children to learn about Latino/a studies in FWISD classrooms
In September, Board of Education trustees authorized the District to hire TCU’s Comparative Race and Ethnic Studies as a consultant to develop a K-12 overlay curriculum relating to Latino/a American History and Culture that will be added to classroom lessons. In-depth Latino/a studies electives will also be developed at the secondary level.
The 2017-2018 school year, the District developed a similar K-12 overlay curriculum with a focus on African and African-American History and Culture.
