DH Literacy Initiative Project Starting Soon

The Dolores Huerta Literacy Initiative was established to promote literacy growth across all grade levels at our school. We are a group of teachers, parents, and community volunteers interested in supporting our school to improve in all academic areas. We believe increasing literacy in every child is crucial to developing not just their academic performance, but their social development.

Our goals for school year 2019-2020 are as follows:

  • By May 1, 2020 100% of students in each grade level will know the following amount of Fry sight words:
    Sight Word Goal
  • By the end of Kinder, 100% of students will know the name and sound of all the letters in the alphabet.
  • By the end of first grade, 100% of DLE students will read all the Spanish simple syllables in isolation.
  • By the end of school year 2019-2020, 80% of students in grades K-2nd will be reading on grade level.
  • By the end of school year 2019-2020, 50% of students in grades 3-5th will meet grade level expectations on the reading STAAR.
  • By the end of school year 2019-2020, 80% of students in grades K-3rd will show one year’s growth in reading levels as measured by Fountas & Pinnell.
  • By the end of school year 2019-2020, 90% of students in grades 4-5th will show one year’s growth in reading STAAR as measured by their district growth goals.
  • 100% of students not meeting grade level expectations or growth goals by the end of first grade will be referred to the RTI committee to review data, and determine if they are in need of additional evaluations and services.
  • By March 6th, 100% of classrooms will have at least 10 parents with library cards either from Dolores Huerta Library or the Fort Worth Public Library.
  • By the end of February 2020, the Dolores Huerta Literacy Initiative will consist of at least 10 staff members and 10 parents.

In order to meet these goals, our Literacy Initiative has agreed to several new programs and projects at our school to start in the spring of school year 2019-2020.

We are in need of volunteers to help us in all aspects of these programs. If you are interested in helping please contact the school front office at (817) 814-4400, Ms. Herrera at, or Ms. Ibarra at
