Wrestling District Results
Last Friday the CRHS wrestling team competed in the District 5-5A district tournament. This is the first of the big 3 tournaments that we have been working on all year. If you place in the top 4 then you advance on to the regional tournament.
All in all it has been a rough season due to our youth and inexperience. That being said I am happy to say that the boys competed well and were a good representation of Carter-Riverside. Many of our wrestlers placed and I am proud to say that we have 3 regional qualifiers.
The placers are
Justin Bunyavong took 2nd at 113lbs
Marcos Ocampo took 1st at 126lbs
Michael Velazquez took 6th at 138lbs
Santos Bermudez took 4th at 160lbs
Richard Huynh took 6th at 182lbs
Manuel Verduzco took 6th at 220lbs
Marcos Ocampo finished off his regular season at the very top, becoming a district champion. Marcos commanded all of his matches including his championship match against Northwest. He has worked tirelessly for this achievement and we expect him to do very well at regionals. This is his first district championship and his 3rd time qualifying for regionals.
Justin Bunyavong is once again a regional qualifier. This marks his 4th year as a regional qualifier. He lost a close championship match against Northwest making him the 2nd place finisher. We expect him to go the distance at regionals and once again qualify for state.
Santos Bermudez was nearly resigned to being a regional alternate. However, we had the ability to challenge the 4th place qualifier from Northwest. Santos commanded this match and secured the win and the 4th place sport. This is his 2nd time as a regional qualifier but his first time he will get to wrestle at the regional level.
Please give all of these young men well-earned congratulations on their accomplishments this season and please wish the regional qualifiers good luck this weekend. The top 4 out of region advance to the state tournament!
