Special Olympics Athletes from FWISD Appear on ESPN
Special Olympics student-athletes from the Fort Worth ISD recently appeared on a nationally-televised game that aired on ESPN.
The students played on the Unified Sports team with students from Texas Christian University in a mini basketball game during halftime of the TCU-West Virginia men’s basketball game, January 15. Video footage of the students aired on ESPN prior to the start of the game’s second half.
“The athletes had a wonderful time, and it was a night to remember,” said Lynn McGuff, a FWISD adapted physical educator and a Special Olympics assistant coordinator.
Unified Sports is an inclusive sports program that brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. More than 4,500 elementary, middle and high schools nationwide participate in Unified Sports programs which promote social inclusion for shared sports, training and competition experiences, according to the Special Olympics website.
