Trimble Tech Culinary Students Advance to ProStart State Competition
Five students enrolled in the culinary arts program at Trimble Tech High School have advanced to state competition in the restaurant management team category. This is Trimble Tech’s sixth year to qualify for ProStart state competition and the third straight year for their restaurant management team to advance to state competition. They are the only team to ever represent Fort Worth ISD at ProStart State Competition.
The team placed third at the recent 2019 Texas ProStart Regional Invitational at the University of Houston. Texas ProStart is the flagship program of Texas Restaurant Association Education Foundation (TRAEF). The program prepares students for careers in the restaurant and food service industry. Advancing to state are graduating senior Anna Loera and juniors Alexandra Gonzales, Kimberly Sanchez, Rayven Barnaba, and Paola Martinez.
Trimble Tech’s team demonstrated their knowledge of the restaurant and foodservice industry by developing a new restaurant concept and presenting it to a panel of judges at a simulated business exposition. The team submitted a written proposal for review and presented their concepts to several groups of judges through verbal presentations, question-and-answer periods, and posters.
The competition is designed so students can present their restaurant concept to judges as they rotate throughout the competition floor. Students set up a 10-by-10-foot trade show booth to demonstrate their restaurant concept. In the booth, students had a copy of their written proposal and their 24-by- 36-inch posters.
Judges said the team’s concept, "Bento Bonito," was a creative idea that captured their attention with the team’s use of innovative technology advancements. Last year, this young team won fourth place at regional competition. The students met their goal this year to be in the top three to qualify for state competition.
The Texas ProStart State Invitational will be March 8-9, 2019 at St. Phillips College in San Antonio. Trimble Tech chef and culinary arts instructor Natasha Bruton said she is proud of her team’s drive to succeed at all levels of competition.
"We are the only team to ever represent Fort Worth ISD at ProStart State Competition. We congratulate these five ladies as they prepare to take this concept to FCCLA competition in a few short weeks and they continue to improve their concept for ProStart state as well.”
The Texas ProStart Invitational is an annual competitive culinary and restaurant management showcase for students interested in pursuing careers in the restaurant industry. Top chefs, industry moguls and restaurant suppliers serve as judges and critique students’ presentations. Students work in teams to prepare and present their restaurant concepts.
As the philanthropic foundation of the Texas Restaurant Association, the TRAEF is committed to providing educational opportunities for restaurant careers in Texas. The TRAEF believes strongly that their industry's potential is unlimited.
