Rain or Shine: Volunteers Construct North Hi Mount Elementary Playground

Volunteers braved rain and mud to construct a state-of-the-art playground at North Hi Mount Elementary School, Saturday, May 11.nhm1

The playground, funded by a grant from national nonprofit KaBOOM!, replaces an outdated, 30-year old play space and offers an area to be enjoyed not only by North Hi Mount students but before and after school care programs and community youth sports teams. Fort Worth ISD partnered with additional volunteers from Foresters Financial, an international financial service provider, for the playground build.

In March, children in the community were asked to draw their dream playground, and those sketches inspired the play area built. The goal is to provide an educational and interactive area supporting outdoor play and brain development.

The event was attended by school staff and students, families, Superintendent Kent P. Scribner, Texas Rep. Charlie Geren (R-Fort Worth), Pete Geren, president and chief executive officer of the Sid W. Richardson Foundation and a former U.S. Congressman, and Carin “CJ” Evans, Fort Worth ISD nhm2 Board of Education trustee-elect.  Fort Worth District 7 Councilman Dennis Shingleton offered remarks at a kickoff ceremony hosted before volunteers got to work constructing the playground.

[Fort Worth] is blessed to have leaders who answer the challenge for children in spite of rain, wind and mud,” Dr. Scribner wrote in a Facebook post about the May 11 event.

“The amount of support, energy, commitment, love, encouragement and perseverance that came out today was unimaginable,” the North Hi Mount Elementary PTA added in a separate statement on its Facebook shortly after the playground was completed, May 11. “Thank you all for everything you did today for our students and our community! And thank you to [Foresters Financial] and [Kaboom] for this once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Foresters Financial and KaBOOM!, since 2006, has constructed 154 playgrounds in 93 cities across throughout North America.
