FWISD Observes Patriot Day 2019
Multiple ceremonies and activities were hosted at Fort Worth ISD campuses this week in observance of Patriot Day, Wednesday, September 11.
The day marked 18 years since nearly 3,000 lives were lost in terror attacks on the United States.
The FWISD JROTC Department created a memorial display in the lobby of the FWISD Central Administration. A ceremony there Wednesday drew a large crowd of District employees. The JROTC assisted Superintendent Kent P. Scribner in laying a red, white and blue wreath that read “In Memory” in the lobby, and the JROTC led those in attendance in a moment of silence.
U.S. flags at FWISD schools and buildings flew at half-staff from sunrise until sunset Wednesday in observance of 9/11.
A replay of the Patriot Day ceremony is available on the FWISD Facebook page.
At Luella Merrett Elementary School and S.S. Dillow elementary schools, students are participating in a volunteer service project this week in which they’re writing letters and poems and drawing pictures for first responders and deployed military members to thank them for their service. Teachers say they hope to deliver and mail the messages next week.
“In the past, students would do a gratitude or thank you note to first responders. This year’s focus are military members deployed to war,” said Chantel Fontenot, a fifth-grade math and science teacher at Luella Merrett Elementary who is organizing the volunteer service project on her campus. “The ultimate goal is to empower our students that they, too, can impact others or even change the world.
“I just hope that they see that they can make an impact in someone’s life in their community and in society, and that they’re not too little. It’s the simple gesture that shows the most gratitude.”
By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the U.S. Congress designated September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day," and by Public Law 111-13, approved April 21, 2009, the Congress requested the observance of 9/11 as an annually recognized "National Day of Service and Remembrance."
