Kirkpatrick ES Chess Team Competes at State Contest

Two chess teams from Fort Worth ISD’s Kirkpatrick Elementary School were top 10 finishers at the Texas North/Central Elementary Scholastic Chess Championship in Houston over spring break.kirkpatrick

In their respective categories, the elementary junior varsity squad completed the competition with a fourth-place finish while Kirkpatrick’s primary JV team finished seventh. Students Monica Montano, Emily Mendoza and Erick Hernandez, who won four out for seven matches, received individual trophies.

“It was amazing watching our kids compete at such a complicated game,” said Cynthia Flores, a third-grade teacher at Kirkpatrick Elementary.  “We didn’t do as well as we hoped, but every win was hard earned.”

In a grand sendoff, students lined to the halls at Kirkpatrick Elementary Thursday, March 8, with noisemakers and celebratory signs, offering up applause and high-fives to wish their peers well.

Parents, who took time off work, and school staff made the four-hour drive to Houston to cheer students on and to see them compete.  They also raised more than $1,000 to fund the students’ trip to the state competition.

“The most amazing to me was to see all of the parents who made this experience possible for their children. Parents who had to take time off of work and travel four hours for their child to experience something they’ll remember the rest of their lives,” Ms. Flores said. “Without them no one would have ever heard about the Kirkpatrick Elementary Chess team.”

The Texas North/Central Elementary Scholastic Championship was hosted March 9-11 in Houston.
