Racial Equity Summit Set for March 23
Fort Worth ISD hosts its second annual Racial Equity Summit, Saturday, March 23, at the I.M. Terrell Academy for STEM and VPA.
This free, one-day summit, sponsored by Fort Worth ISD’s Division of Equity and Excellence, brings together the District and the Tarrant County community for engaging conversations and more than a dozen breakout sessions focused on racial equity and education.
Check-in begins at 8 a.m. at the Terrell Academy, 1900 I.M. Terrell Way. Parking is available in the east lot.
The keynote speaker is A.J. Crabill, deputy commissioner of governance for the Texas Education Agency. His 8:30 a.m. address, in the VPA Performance Hall, will focus on the summit theme/learning strands -- Race, Equity and Excellence. Mr. Crabill’s responsibilities at TEA support the agency’s work relating to school improvement, charters, governance, complaints management, system support and innovation, investigations, school discipline/safety, accreditation, waivers and districts of innovation.
FWISD students and alumni are among the participants, presenters and performers at this year’s summit.
Mohamed Mohamed, a 2018 O.D. Wyatt High School graduate, will moderate the student-panel, “Students Navigating Race, Equity and Excellence” at 10 a.m. Panelists will include students from Arlington Heights High, Young Men’s Leadership Academy, Paschal High, Southwest High, Young Women’s Leadership Academy and Tarrant County College. Mr. Mohamed, who participated in My Brother’s Keeper as a FWISD student, is currently pursuing a degree in political science and education at Texas Christian University and is an MBK mentor.
North Side High School’s Mariachi Espuelas de Plata will perform at the summit’s community-style lunch. Attendees are encouraged to meet and sit with someone new at lunch. It’s hoped that questions at the lunch tables will spark discussions that bring about multiple perspectives
Nearly 200 people are registered to attend.
This year’s summit promises engaging conversations about racial equity and seminars with a focus on racial identity. The event will also address ideas for advancing racial equity in neighborhoods and schools throughout Fort Worth.
New to this year’s summit are Racial Affinity sessions, scheduled for the afternoon. Attendees sharing the same racial identity and lived racial experiences will have an opportunity to talk.
Free booth space at the summit expo is still available. For more details, contact Charles Hodges, director of Equity and Excellence’s Eastside Alliance, at Charles.Hodges@fwisd.org or by calling 817-300-8766.
