From March 8, 2019 to April 12, 2019, the District hosted Math Bee competitions at over 40 elementary schools where third to fifth grade students faced off against one another using mental math to solve number sense problems.
Melvinia Robinson, elementary core curriculum and innovation coordinator in the FWISD Mathematics Department, said earlier this year that the bee “is designed to highlight the students’ love of math and to gain momentum in thinking about numbers in a flexible way.” The District bee originated from classroom Number Talks that help students “build confidence in their mathematical abilities and computational fluency, opening the doors for deeper math concepts and courses,” she previously said.
“The longest campus Math Bee lasted 3 hours,” Ms. Robinson said of this year’s contests. “We plan to have a District-level competition next year, where each campus winner competes for the FWISD title.”
Origo Education is sponsoring food for the ceremony, and Mentoring Minds is donating goody bag for Math Bee winners.
Campus winners may still RSVP to attend this Friday’s ceremony by contacting Ms. Robinson at 817-814-2565 or by emailing melvinia.robinson@fwisd.org.
