TEA Announces No Accountability Ratings For Schools, Districts This Academic Year
No Texas schools will receive accountability ratings for the 2019-2020 academic cycle because of extended statewide school closures, the Texas Education Agency has announced. The closures are due to a state of disaster designation declared because of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
All Texas schools and districts will receive the label “Not Rated: Declared State of Disaster Designation for the 2019-20 Academic Accountability Cycle,” according to the TEA.
“While we continuously work to ensure our ‘A-F’ Accountability System paints an accurate picture of school performance, these unprecedented circumstances have forced all of us to change and adapt,” Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath said in an April 2 statement. “Given we won’t have underlying information to assess performance, we won’t be assigning accountability letter grades for the 2019-20 school year.”
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has ordered schools remain closed statewide through May 4. Fort Worth ISD Superintendent Kent Scribner announced last week schools will remain closed until further notice and that and students will remain at home receiving online instruction.
“All schools will remain closed until we believe we can safely bring students back to school buildings for in-person teaching and learning and other school-related activities,” Dr. Scribner said.
