AHHS Participates in Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo
The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo is underway, and students from Arlington Heights High School are right in the middle of the action competing and giving tours to elementary-aged children.
Over the course of the three-week event, students from Arlington Heights will compete in multiple events -- market lambs, goats and steers, beef heifers, youth fancy poultry, open breeding rabbits, youth breeding rabbits, and agricultural mechanic projects. Nearly 30 animals will be shown by students, said Linsey Shands, agriscience teacher at Arlington Heights.
Within the first couple weeks of the Stock Show, Arlington Heights students placed in the following events:
Junior Agricultural Mechanic Project: Second place;
Junior Wether Lamb: Mercedes Peterson placed 14th place with her light weight Fine Wool Cross lamb, Greta Meyer placed 16th place with her light weight Fine Wool Cross lamb;
Poultry Show: Elizabeth Mathis placed first with her Brown Leghorn rooster, Nickolas Rodriguez finished first respectively with a Delaware rooster and Rhode Island Red and fifth with his Buff Orpington
Open Breeding Rabbits: Alexa Aceves, second place and Alyssa Barnes, third place
Calf Scramble: Diego Romero, Jimena Rodriguez and Jennifer Winn will all receive a $500 certificate to put towards the purchase of either a beef or dairy heifer after catching a calf.
Students will show animals through February 9.
In addition to competing, students gave 56 Stock Show tours to youth, January 30 and 31.
Now in its 123rd year, the Stock Show and rodeo includes three weeks of rodeo shows, world-class livestock events, exhibits, live music, a carnival midway and much more. The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo continues through February 9. For more details, visit fwssr.com.
