FWISD To Mark Red Ribbon Week By Educating Parents, Caregiving About Vaping
The Fort Worth ISD will join Challenge of Tarrant County in observing Red Ribbon Week, October 23-31 by raising awareness regarding the dangers of vaping.
Throughout the week, educational materials will be shared with parents and caregivers about recognizing vaping use by children, its dangers and how to speak with children about vaping. The goal of this effort is to decrease vaping use by children and reduce illness and death associated with it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, vaping or electronic-cigarette use has resulted in nearly 1,500 lung injury cases nationwide and 33 deaths, based on a report from Tuesday, October 15, 2019.
“Vaping is a socially acceptable occurrence among teens today with irreversible and often deadly consequences,” said Vicki Warren, FWISD intervention services director. “In partnership with [Challenge of Tarrant County] and the Prevention Provider’s Coalition, Fort Worth ISD is taking steps to educate parents and caregivers on vaping. During Red Ribbon Week 2019, parents and caregivers will be educated on what vaping is, learn how to recognize vaping products, become knowledgeable regarding the physical consequences of vaping, and be provided information on how to speak with their children on this important issue.”
Established in the 1980s by National Family Partnership, formerly the National Federation of parents for Drug Free Youth, Red Ribbon Week educates and encourages youth to participate in drug-free activities.
