Fort Worth ISD Board Approves Resolution Calling for School Building Capacity Study

The Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) is reaffirming its commitment to equitable education for all students with a groundbreaking resolution approved at the Board's Regular Meeting on September 26.

FWISD, home to nearly 71,000 students and a diverse community, is dedicated to preparing all students for success in college, career, and community leadership. Under the leadership of the Board and superintendent, the District is transforming its schools to better serve its students.

A key part of this effort is a comprehensive study of school building capacity. Despite a decline in enrollment, the District has not proportionally reduced the number of schools it operates. This has led to underutilized facilities and smaller student populations in some schools, resulting in higher operational costs and fewer academic offerings.

To address this issue, the Board has directed the Superintendent and District staff to conduct a study of excess capacity in school buildings. Hoar Program Management, LLC has been chosen to aid in the creation of FWISD’s District-wide Facility Master Plan. This will include condition assessments, prioritization guidance, and formulating a master plan that will guide the renovation, repurposing, or construction of facilities. The school building capacity study will also assess staffing, educational programming, building capacity, community use of facilities, and maintenance conditions in each school and provide recommendations to address resource inequities among schools.

The District is committed to involving the community, with preliminary findings shared at regional meetings for feedback. A final report, including rightsizing recommendations, will be presented to the Board after community input.

This resolution highlights FWISD's dedication to providing a supportive and well-resourced learning environment for every student and reinforces its commitment to educational equity.
