FWISD Celebrates School Psychology Week with Continued Services for Students, Families
Published November 9, 2023
Fort Worth ISD is committed to providing quality education to all students, and also ensuring our students have healthy minds. The work of our school psychologists is vital to this mission, and the district celebrates them on this School Psychology Week, and every week.
During this special week, we recognize the critical work that school psychologists perform day in and day out, supporting the emotional, social, and academic well-being of our students. School psychologists play an essential role in creating a nurturing and inclusive environment for all learners, helping them reach their full potential.
The Psychological Services Department also plays a major role in providing parental support and resources for families with students on the autism spectrum. This includes a monthly support group, newsletter, and summer camp. The department also has partnered with other district departments to help families access resources both in the district and community to help lift up students’ well-being.
What does a school psychologist do?
Mental Health Support: School psychologists provide vital mental health services, offering counseling and intervention for students facing emotional challenges.
Academic Assessment: They conduct assessments to identify learning difficulties and help tailor educational plans that meet individual student needs.
Behavioral Intervention: School psychologists develop and implement behavior intervention plans to address behavioral issues and promote positive student behavior.
Crisis Response: In times of crisis, school psychologists are a source of support, assisting students, staff, and families to cope with difficult situations.
Collaboration: They collaborate with educators, parents, and other professionals to create a supportive network around students.
FWISD has some of the best
The Texas Association of School Psychologists recently named FWISD’s Dr. Allante Lumas as the 2023-24 School Psychologist of the Year at the doctoral level. Her contributions to school psychology were celebrated at a recent conference.
“With a dedicated service record within the Fort Worth ISD since 2015, Dr. Lumas has consistently demonstrated excellence in her work,” Nicole Stein, director of the FWISD Psychological Services Department, said. “Her commitment to improving the lives of students, her unwavering advocacy for inclusivity and equality, and her steadfast dedication to the field of school psychology are qualities that make her a standout choice for this prestigious award.”
Fort Worth ISD appreciates the dedication and compassion of our school psychologists, who make a profound impact on the lives of our students. This week, we honor their commitment to fostering a safe and supportive learning environment. We encourage everyone to take a moment this School Psychology Week to thank the school psychologists in their community for their essential contributions to education.
