Twelve Campuses Come Off “Improvement Required” List

As the Texas Education Agency (TEA) posts 2015 State Accountability ratings today, the Fort Worth ISD is celebrating that 12 campuses previously rated Improvement Required have now attained the Met Standard rating.  Additionally, Fort Worth ISD campuses earned a total of 181 distinction designations; this is 39 distinctions more than the 142 earned last year. 

Those coming off of Improvement Required include:

  • Dunbar HS
  • Eastern Hills HS
  • Polytechnic HS
  • Success HS
  • Wedgwood 6th
  • Handley MS
  • Morningside MS
  • Dunbar MS
  • Leonard MS
  • Glencrest 6th
  • Jean McClung MS
  • Atwood McDonald ES

As a District, Fort Worth ISD continues to be rated MET Standard.  

This year, FWISD has 129 rated campuses. Of these, 108 (84%) MET Standard. In the District, three fewer campuses (21 compared to 24) are rated Improvement Requiredin 2015 than in 2014. 

By level, the ratings are: 

  • 14 of 15 High Schools (93%) MET Standard
  • 26 of 27 Middle Schools (96%) MET Standard
  • 67 of 85 Elementary Schools (79%) MET Standard
  • 1 of 2 Alternative schools MET Standard

“Our accountability ratings are extremely important to us and it is our goal for every campus to be rated MET Standard. However, no rating can ever adequately represent the hard work and dedication of our principals, teachers, and students,” said Fort Worth ISD Interim Superintendent Patricia Linares. “We celebrate our campuses that attained the MET Standard rating.  While some missed the mark, we are proud of the progress made by those campuses that were so very, very close and we stand ready to fully support each of our campuses in our goal of 100% of them meeting standard next year.” 

In 2015 to attain the MET Standard rating, a campus had to meet the following:

  • Index 1 –  Student Achievement, or
  • Index 2 –  Student Progress, and
  • Index 3 – Closing Performance Gaps, and
  • Index 4 – College & Career (Postsecondary) Readiness.  

This year, the performance benchmark for Index 1 increased from 55 to 60. Due to new mathematics standards, elementary and middle school ratings do not include grade 3-8 STAAR Math results for the 2015 accountability cycle. However, Algebra I scores are included for middle schools.

 Of the 21 campuses rated Improvement Required, 12, or 57%, missed the Met Standard rating by only 1 or 2 points.  These are:

“We are very concerned about the number of elementary schools rated Improvement Required.  However, we are encouraged that all but one elementary school, or 98.8%, met Index 2, Student Progress,” said Dr. Linares. “This suggests that achievement in our elementary schools is moving in the right direction.” 

Campuses that receive an accountability rating of Met Standard are also eligible for distinction designations. Distinction designations are awarded to campuses based on achievement in performance indicators relative to a group of 40 campuses of similar type, size and student demographics. Distinction designations can be earned by campuses for:

  • Academic Achievement in Reading/English Language Arts;
  • Academic Achievement in Mathematics;
  • Academic Achievement in Science;
  • Academic Achievement in Social Studies;
  • Top 25 Percent: Student Progress;
  • Top 25 Percent: Closing Performance Gaps; and
  • Postsecondary Readiness.
