Senior Spotlights

At South Hills High School, senior Dahlia Huezo has developed a photography style that blends emotion, identity, and community into cinematic, deeply personal images. Her work recently earned first place in the Fort Worth ISD Top 10 Senior Art Showcase, while fellow South Hills student Astrid Vargas also placed in the Top 10.

Huezo first discovered photography in sixth grade, originally drawn to landscapes. But under the guidance of teacher Ms. Stewart, her focus shifted to staged, story-driven images inspired by her own experiences. Today, she describes her work as a visual diary which captures feelings, memories, and moments through carefully constructed scenes.

Much of her photography highlights urban environments and neighborhoods like the ones she grew up in, often exploring themes of change and gentrification. She prefers to create meaning in-camera through lighting, composition, and staging rather than heavy editing. Despite her success, Huezo says confidence has been one of her biggest challenges, crediting Ms. Stewart’s support for helping her grow as an artist.

Her cinematic approach has also sparked a passion for film. After graduation, Huezo plans to attend Tarrant County College to study cinematography and continue developing her visual storytelling.

Along the way, fellow senior Astrid Vargas has been a constant collaborator and supporter. The two share a passion for capturing the beauty of abandoned spaces and have helped shine a spotlight on the growing photography program at South Hills High School.
