For World Languages Institute senior Didier Mercado, music has been more than an extracurricular activity. It’s been a connection to family, culture, and community. Since sixth grade, he has been part of the school’s Estudiantina program, a traditional string ensemble rooted in Spanish heritage and closely tied to Mexican culture.

Mercado’s decision to join was inspired by his family, especially his mother, who grew up in Guanajuato, Mexico, where Estudiantina traditions are common. “My mom always wanted to be in one when she was younger, but she never had the opportunity,” he said. Encouraged by her and inspired by his older sister, a former participant, Mercado decided to carry on the tradition.

Over the past six years, Mercado has grown into a skilled musician, playing guitar and learning mandolin. Beyond music, he says the program has taught him valuable lessons about teamwork and dedication. “It’s not just about how well you perform individually,” he said. “It’s about the whole group and working together to create something.”

Outside the classroom, Mercado has stayed involved through organizations like the Hispanic Honor Society and other service-focused clubs. He has helped with events such as the Spanish Spelling Bee and language proficiency testing for incoming students, something he says has been meaningful. “I think it’s cool that I get to help with school events and advocate for others.”

His hard work has paid off academically as well. With support from teachers and campus leadership, Mercado earned Texas Christian University’s prestigious Chancellor’s Scholarship, a full-tuition award given to a select group of students. This fall, he plans to attend TCU and major in mechanical engineering, a field sparked by his brother’s influence and his own coursework in engineering and design.

From honoring his family’s musical roots to preparing for a future in engineering, Mercado’s journey reflects the culture, commitment, and community that have shaped his time at World Languages Institute.
